The Stars

Tonight Tyler asked, in his very inquisitive way, "Mom, wouldn't it be crazy if it were always nighttime?" This of course launched us into a discussion of Alaska and the almost constant daytime they experience during the summer. Tyler thought about that for a minute, then said, "I wish it were never dark here. That would be cool." "Not me", I said, "If it weren't for the dark, we would never see the stars."

After Tyler went to bed, I got thinking about that little discussion. And how often during my life I have found myself enjoying the sunshine and the happy times of life- wishing, like Tyler, that it might never get dark. But sure enough, those dark moments come- when life feels so hard. But in retrospect, it was during those dark times that I most clearly saw the guiding lights in my own life. So maybe it is a good thing that we experience those hard times, because "if it weren't for the dark, we would never see the stars."

Time for a Little Demotivation

Each year, Vern's work send out Demotivator calendars to their clients for Christmas. Vern just brought home the 2008 catalog and I feel there are definitely some that are blog worthy.

"Minds are like Parachutes, just because you've lost yours doesn't mean you can borrow mine."

"With focus, determination and steroids, men can achieve impossible dreams. Like breaking a world record. Or growing their own breasts."

"Madness does not always howl. Sometimes, it is the Quiet Voice at the end of the day saying, "Hey, is there room in your head for one more?""

Finding The Thumb

I just learned how to play with fonts. AWESOME!
Anyways, a few weeks ago Rachel found her thumb. This has resulted in three things:
1: she no longer has any desire to take her pacifiers
2: Vern is CONSTANTLY pulling her thumb out of her mouth
3: I am CONSTANTLY taking pictures of it, I think it's so cute.
I realize, of course, that around the time she is heading off to Kindergarten with her thumb in her mouth, I might not think it nearly so cute. But for the time being- I can't help but smile. She is just so precious, and the thumb sucking only adds to her charms! If she's going to do it, I might as well enjoy it now (since I am going to hate it later!)

IT'S HARD TO IMAGINE LIFE GETTING ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!

Boys With Curly Hair

I realize that some of you may be looking at this picture and thinking, "Wait a minute- she's not one of yours!!". This of course is obvious since my children come in 2 shades, white and whitest!! But this beautiful gal happens to be Maggie- one of Tyler's good friends and the focus of this story.
Awhile back, Tyler was convinced that he wanted to marry Maggie. He would tell me, in such a discouraged fashion, that he had been asking Maggie to marry him, and she kept telling him "No". I tried to convince him that he really didn't need to worry about who he was going to marry- that he had plenty of time to be rejected in the future (just teasing- I didn't say that!!). But I just found out that during this time, a neighbor girl had asked Maggie why she didn't want to marry Tyler. Of course she responded with all her true sass (and we should have seen this coming), "Because I don't like boys with curly hair". Ouch!! Well Tyler, if that's the case...your romantic future may be bleak (and you can blame Grandma Clegg- the curls are her fault!) I think this demotivator says it best!

Determination

So, my sometimes naughty little Hannah was having one of her naughty moments one day right before dinner. Since Vern and I were busy setting the table and getting dinner ready, we decided to put her in her high chair for time out. This way we could strap her in and not have to spend so much time putting her BACK in time out. She, of course, hated it and just screamed the whole time. Pretty soon, we realized that the screaming had stopped. We turn around to see that amid the screams, she had scooted herself all the way up to the table and was now playing with her brother. This girl is nothing if not determined!! The following picture shows just how far her determination took her...not an easy task!! But the thought of it still makes me smile!
